Lacrosse Registration for Beginners

Lacrosse can seem overwhelming for first-time players and parents, but we’re here to help!

On this page, you will learn how to:

Understand the “Ux” naming convention
Register your child in the right program
Know the difference between box and field lacrosse

What do they mean by U7 and U17?

Lacrosse follows an age-based naming convention using "U" (Under) followed by an age number. This means:

ᐧ U7 is for players who have not and will not turn 7 during the playing year.

ᐧ Ontario Lacrosse uses odd-numbered age divisions: U7, U9, U11, U13, U15, and U17.

ᐧ Players cannot play down a division but may be called up to play in a higher division.

What’s the difference between box lacrosse and field lacrosse?

We get it—lacrosse can be a little confusing to new families. The sport is divided into three sectors, four including Sixes (the new Olympic version of the sport). The main sectors are Box Lacrosse, Field Lacrosse and Women’s Field Lacrosse and each has their own set of rules. Understanding each one will help you choose the best program for your child.

“Ok… so does it matter which one we register for?”

We’re glad you asked.

We recommend that all new players register for House Lacrosse, which is perfect for all skill levels and beginners.

Given that it’s played inside of a rink with boards similar to hockey, playing Box Lacrosse increases the game pace and maximizes participation and development opportunities for all players. It allows for more touches with the ball and keeps kids moving and engaged while learning to play lacrosse.

House League opportunities are introduced at U5.

Field Lacrosse opportunities are introduced at U9.

Women’s Field Lacrosse opportunities are introduced at U9.

While Women’s Field Lacrosse opportunities are also introduced to girls at early ages, we encourage girls to play both, as the best Women’s Field Lacrosse players also play Box Lacrosse and our programs compliment each other very well!

“What’s Rep? Do we have to be asked to try out?”

“Rep” is short for “Representative”, Rep teams are the teams that represent the club in competitions with other clubs. It’s the highest caliber of lacrosse within the club.

Milton Minor Lacrosse Association offers Rep programs in Box Lacrosse and Field Lacrosse. Players must be residentially bound to the club to play Rep.

In age divisions where there are enough players interested in Rep, a development team (Rep 2 team) is also established. Rep teams are rated annually from “A” to “E” and participate in league play and provincials under the Ontario Lacrosse Association.

Rep Box is introduced at U7 while Rep Field and Women’s Field are introduced at U9.

New players are always welcome (and encouraged) to try out for our Rep teams!

Players must be registered for a Local League or Rep program to try out. Players that do not make a Rep team will be refunded in full, however we strive to ensure that all players wishing to play Rep have the opportunity to do so.

All refund requests must be made in writing or emailed to the Registrar by the individual who paid the fees. Any applicable refunds will be processed either by e-transfer or returned via credit card at the discretion of the MMLA. Please allow 2-4 weeks for refunds to be processed.

REFUNDS

Upon registration, certain fees are automatically deducted by third parties, including the Ontario Lacrosse Association insurance and governing body fees, registration system, and credit card processing. These fees are not recoverable by the MMLA and as a result, all requests for refunds shall be subject to a non-refundable $35 administration fee.

No refunds for voluntary withdrawals after the start of the program.

An additional fee for any incurred uniform costs shall be withheld.

All equipment belonging to the MMLA must be returned before the refund will be processed.

Any player that is placed on a rep team shall be responsible for their portion of the full assessed amount of the rep team programming cost.

No refunds will be provided if a player is suspended or expelled under the OMLA, OLA, OMFLL, or OWFL discipline policy or code of conduct rules.

If a player must withdraw for medical reasons after the start of programming, a doctor's note is required to support the medical reason. The non-refundable fee, incurred uniform costs, and a prorated amount for any sessions attended shall be withheld.

MMLA Release Process

Anyone who resides in Milton, and wishes to play lacrosse, must play for the Milton Mavericks. Players who wish to play elsewhere, must obtain a release from the Milton Minor Lacrosse Association.

As per OLA Release Policy 1.4:

The Association has a fundamental commitment to the growth and development of the game of lacrosse in Milton. The release request must be completed on the appropriate OLA Release Form and follow the procedure outlined on the said form and submitted via email to the President by the requestor. Upon receiving a release request, the President will confirm receipt of the release with the requestor within twenty-four (24) hours and will convene a special meeting of the Board of Directors to hear the request and consider its contents within five (5) business days of receipt of the request. Caliber of play shall not factor into the decision to grant or deny a release request.

To apply for a release, you must:

  • Ensure yourself, or the player, is currently registered with the MMLA for the current season.
  • Download and fully complete the release form(s).
  • Email the completed documents to the MMLA President.

After sending in the completed documentation, you will receive a standard reply from the president, confirmation your release has been received.

A hearing will be scheduled to discuss your release request, and a fee of $30 will be levied. Release hearing fees are not waived under any circumstances. If the release is approved, the player is free to register to the next closest centre. If the release is denied, the player can appeal the decision to the Zone committee.

In the event that the association cannot offer a rep team in a specific division after tryouts are held, only players already registered for the current season with the association will be granted a temporary release to play elsewhere. Anyone not registered demonstrates no intent to play and permission to play for another centre will not be granted.
